Finding Your Motivation to Lose Weight
Steve Pavlina writes a very interesting article on finding your motivation to accomplish certain tasks. The example he uses is losing weight, and I found it very interesting, especially when he got into my own personal reasons:
Now suppose you are a darkworker, someone who is fear-polarized. And you realize that you need to lose some weight. Your motivation to lose that weight will ultimately come from your commitment to serving your own self-interest. You could care less about being a role model for others, but this extra weight has to go because it's getting in the way of your goals. You need energy to achieve the success you crave, and a better looking body will make it easier to attract a mate to satisfy your lust. Weight loss may also help you advance in your career. Also, it's important to be more fit than those around you, since you're always in competition with them, and extra fitness will give you an edge. The fitness you achieve for yourself is driven entirely by your desire to serve your own needs. How fit or fat other people are is irrelevant, except to the extent that you look better by comparison. This is a very powerful motivator for someone who is truly fear-polarized.
"Fear" in this case doesn't refer to terror or even insecurity. If you read his article on polarity, he believes most actions and intents are motivated by "love" and "fear". Love meaning your intention is to better the world and make others happy; Fear meaning you want to make yourself happy.
Due to its negative connotation, I'm not sure I like the word "fear" used in this context, but I'll stick with the words he uses so as not to confuse anyone by mixing terminology.
Back to the article, what I want to stress is your belief in achieving your weight loss goals. You need to wake up every morning believing you're getting thinner. You need to believe every meal you eat is a nutritious, fat-burning one. Developing a positive and focused mindset should be your first step in trying to accomplish any goal.
If you want to learn more about intention and manifestation, Steve's site is a good place to start. Also worth noting is one of the first books on the subject, Maxwell Maltz's The New Psycho-Cybernetics. Both sources provide excellent information on the topic, and I believe once you've fully committed to the weight-loss process, you'll find it much easier to stick to your diet, exercise regularly, and succeed completely.
